What Microsoft customers and partners are saying

Hear from some of the Customery Academy students — Microsoft Business Applications customers and partners — who have taken the Scrum for Microsoft Business Apps course.

      Joel Lindstom
      Principal Architect, Hitachi Solutions
      11x Microsoft MVP
      United States

"Neil knows Dynamics, and I can't think of anyone better suited to teach you how to apply the principles of agile Scrum to Dynamics 365 deployments."

      Daniel Hesketh
      Director, MiiiA
      Australia

"We’d been cherry picking aspects of agile frameworks in our projects for a while, but I was keen to learn more. Seeing one of Neil’s Dynamics 365 Saturday presentations (featuring the Lego!) really got me hooked. The Introduction to Scrum for Dynamics 365 course was a great way to help refresh and refocus my team to go 'all in'."

      Joe Gill
      Dynamics 365 Consultant
      Microsoft MVP
      Ireland

"I found the Customery Scrum course was a great help in providing a clear and concise approach in using Scrum on Dynamics 365 projects."

      Brian Illand
      Microsoft Practice Lead, Codec
      United Kingdom

"An excellent course - one to give your customers if they still have a waterfall-style fixed-price / fixed-scope mentality that isn't working. What makes this course superb are the simple but practical real-world tips that make it easy for everyone to understand. For example, 'avoid sprints on a Monday or Friday as these overlap with personal leave'. All organisations using Dynamics should consider a Scrum methodology and this is a great place to start."

      Greg Owens
      Director, Vitalogy IT Solutions
      United Kingdom

"The course is proving to be fun, easy to consume and most of all: relevant. It does exactly as it promises – interprets Scrum in the context of delivering Dynamics 365 projects. It’s all very 'Neil' - light-hearted yet engaging and authoritative. Neil rightly speaks from a place of authority yet makes no assumptions about your level of knowledge of Scrum. Plus, your progress is all but guaranteed as each increment is short (rarely over 10 minutes) making it easy to fit a least one lecture in every day. Every Dynamics 365 project you ever work on should follow the Scrum 365 approach – we’d all have happier clients, less stressful projects and be happier in our work."

      Nick Doelman
      Microsoft MVP
      Canada

"When faced with a massive Dynamics 365 project with hundreds of pages of requirements, we knew that we needed to think different to be able to build the system in an efficient and manageable way. Applying the Scrum principles covered in Neil’s course, the massive requirements document was broken down into a set of manageable sprints. Our dev team feel both excited and empowered to be able to participate in establishing the effort and allocation of tasks. Our daily scrums were key in collaborating effectively to delivering value to the customer successfully. We are continuing to evolve our use of Scrum and I can’t image taking on any future Dynamics 365 project using any other implementation methodology."

      Ethan Weatherby-Fell
      Project Delivery Manager, Factor
      Australia

"Timeboxing has been the biggest difference in my project as well as the proper ways of adopting the Scrum principles and ceremonies. I have already recommended this some project managers I know and work with as this is ideal for them to learn especially as some jump from a project manager to scrum master, like I did. This is a great course to learn apply to work in Microsoft Business Apps."

      Fiona Whiteing
      Associate Director, KPMG
      Australia

"Neil’s expertise in using Scrum for Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement implementations is second to none – having the opportunity to tap into his knowledge and experience has helped me in addressing gaps in my knowledge so that I can ensure an optimal outcome for my clients in their agile Dynamics 365 implementations."

      Julain Sharp
      Dynamics 365 Consultant/Trainer, Vigence
      United Kingdom

"I’ve been using agile approaches to Dynamics 365 projects for a while now, but Neil’s course has helped me crystallise how I to do better in future, with the added advantage of preparing me for another certification! All organisations adopting Dynamics 365 should take this course."

What you'll learn in this course

      Introduction

To help you get the most out of the course, I'll give you a quick tour of the course components and explain the two different ways that successful students usually complete the course. Your success starts here.

      Section 1: Scrum theory

The course kicks off by explaining the theory that underpins Scrum, and its pillars core values.  Understanding and embracing these principles is key difference between 'doing agile' and 'being agile'.

      Section 2: Scrum team

In this section, we look at the three essential roles in the Scrum team and we examine the responsibilities and essential qualities of the product owner, scrum master and developers in a Microsoft Business Apps project.

      Section 3: Scrum events

There are five events in Scrum and we learn about them in this section. They are the sprint, the daily scrum, sprint planning, sprint review and sprint retrospective. There's one more important activity, backlog refinement, that isn't an event in Scrum, but it's a recommended practice followed by almost every Scrum team.

      Section 4: Scrum artefacts

There are three artefacts that Scrum teams have to deliver. In this section, we learn about the product backlog, the sprint backlog and the increment. Once you know the required deliverables of Scrum, your team can choose what other artefacts it will produce during your project.

      Section 5: Scrum stories

To help you apply what you've learned about Scrum to your next Microsoft Business Apps project, I share three case study videos from some of my projects and the best practices and hard lessons I learned along the way.

      Section 6: Scrum certification

The Scrum.org Professional Scrum Master I certification demonstrates you understand the Scrum's theory, roles, events and artefacts and you're ready to join a scrum team. If you join the Professional or Team plans you'll get access to my annotated Scrum Guide with study notes and a practice exam that you can take until you're ready to take the official exam at Scrum.org.

      Hi there, I'm Neil Benson

      Neil Benson

Welcome to Customery. My mission is to help everyone use the Scrum framework to successfully implement Microsoft Business Applications. That’s why I created the Scrum for Microsoft Business Apps course, as well as my blog and podcast.

I started using the Scrum framework to implement Microsoft Dynamics CRM in 2008. In fact, the case study of my first project is one of the lessons in the course. I’ve been working with CRM systems for over 20 years and implementing them for the past 16 years.

I took my Scrum Alliance Certified ScrumMaster training with Mike Cohn and I’m a Scrum.org certified Professional Scrum Master and Professional Product Owner too.

I love pitching, envisioning and delivering agile Microsoft Business Applications projects that provide amazing results for my customers. And amazing experiences for their users and their customers.

As well as running consulting practices for a national firm in the US and a global professional services firm, I’ve started and sold a Microsoft hosting and consulting company. I’ve also spent over ten years as an independent consultant leading Scrum teams delivering successful CRM outcomes.

Microsoft has given me a Most Valuable Professional (MVP) award each year since 2010 for my thought-leadership in the Microsoft Business Applications community. I’ve organised and spoken at numerous Microsoft conferences and user groups in person and online.

I grew up in Belfast and I've lived in Edinburgh, London and Los Angeles. So now you know where my messed-up accent comes from. Today, I live in Brisbane, Australia, with my family who help me build LEGO models for Customery. And if I wasn't delivering Business Applications with Scrum, I'd love to be a pizzaiolo with my own pizzeria.

      Informative, engaging and practical

I took the Scrum for Microsoft Business Apps course to learn how to apply the Scrum framework to Microsoft Dynamics 365 and Power Platform projects. I found the course very informative, engaging, and practical. The instructor, Neil Benson, is an experienced Scrum practitioner and Microsoft MVP who explains the concepts clearly and provides real-world examples from his own projects. The course covers the Scrum theory, roles, events, artefacts, and case studies, as well as tips and resources for preparing for the Scrum.org PSM 1 certification exam. I enjoyed the course and learned a lot from it. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to implement Microsoft Business Applications using Scrum.

      A great learning experience.

Scrum for Microsoft Business Applications is an excellent training course with many valuable real-world examples that help you understand the Scrum practice beyond the Scrum Guide; it also provides excellent advice on preparing for the exam. I totally recommend it.

      Excellent and fun

Great course full of valuable information, very engaging and well presented. And who doesn't love Lego!

      Engaging

Well presented course with engaging content. I would recommend taking the test exams more than once though as you will inevitably find the questions will vary when it comes to the official exam quite a lot. Don't be fooled into thinking you're going to pass if you pass the trial exam once.
